New Insights

The rise of disinformation on social media has negatively impacted society, particularly in Indonesia, where it has exacerbated political polarization. Drone Emprit, developed by Ismail Fahmi, is a crucial tool in combating this trend. In early 2019, during the Indonesian presidential election, Drone Emprit successfully tracked the origins and amplification of the “7 Containers” hoax, which falsely claimed that seven containers of pre-marked ballots had been smuggled through Tanjung Priok. This demonstrated Drone Emprit’s capability in identifying and exposing disinformation.

Ismail Fahmi, the creator of Drone Emprit, began developing the prototype during his postdoctoral studies at Groningen University in the Netherlands in 2010. By 2012, the system was operational in Indonesia, helping to shed light on media and social media trends.

Fahmi explains:

“Drone Emprit is a tool for monitoring conversations on social media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and now TikTok, as well as monitoring online media news based on keywords, names of figures, and events. We collect these conversations and analyze them. From this analysis, we can determine who started a topic, what the big issues are, when it started trending, in which regions, and perform sentiment analysis to understand public sentiment, whether positive or negative.”

Drone Emprit’s goal is to enlighten the public about what is genuinely happening online. It is particularly focused on public interest issues, government-related topics, hoaxes, disinformation, and the narrative battles during elections.

Fahmi continues:

“Drone Emprit specifically publishes issues related to public interests, government issues, such as hoaxes, disinformation, and narrative battles during elections. The aim is to help the public understand the source and authenticity of trending news, the spread of information, and to expose those attempting to manipulate public opinion.”

Combating Disinformation

Drone Emprit is a significant innovation in mitigating disinformation in Indonesia. Despite the persistence of hoaxes and fake news, initiatives like Drone Emprit are crucial.

Merlyna Lim from the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University, Canada, emphasizes the role of influential figures:

“We must remain vigilant, and it is especially important for intellectuals, researchers, journalists, and other influential figures with followers to refrain from exacerbating polarization and conflicts within society.”

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Fahmi Ismail is prepared to enhance tracking capabilities with Drone Emprit and collaborate with fact-checkers to minimize the impact of disinformation on Indonesian society.
